Christian Schoppe
Hamburg photographer Christian Schoppe began his carrier with the camera abroad, shooting portraits of artists such as Jeff Koons, Mike Kelly, Raymond Pettibon and a host of others. Photographing national as well as international artists and celebrities is still one of his main interests. But for several years now, he has focused on landscapes, cities and their inhabitants.
In his „POSTCARDS OF THE WORLD” series, reflecting the popularity of snapshots, he treats us to images of the trips he made on cruises on the MS Europa between 2010 and 2012. The photos invite us to retrace the itinerary on which Christian Schoppe journeyed on his oceanic trips from Europe to India and later to America and Mexico. Besides highlighting the atmosphere of diverse countries and their cities, they typically visualize rhythms of their everyday life. We see remarkable viewpoints of a confident eye, like the Mumbai laundry in India, the gondolas in Venice, a summer’s day in St. Emilion in France or palm trees lining a highway in Los Angeles.
Schoppe’s photo reportages about landscapes and cities underscore his ability to capture calm moments as well as the latent, unusual perspectives of a setting. Taken with an analogue camera without a tripod, the photos always look natural in the existing light, never artificial or staged. His high-quality pigment prints bring out the personal impressions he gained from the landscapes and momentary situations, which he chose to photograph.
